Qatar M-Sport Driver Quotes

As RallyRACC Rally de España started in style this evening, the Qatar M-Sport crews got off to a solid start. With M-Sport making up more than half of the event’s entry, it may come as no surprise that the Cumbrian firm’s designed and manufactured Ford Fiestas also accounted for 50 per cent of the overall top-ten come the end of Day 1.

Drivers Quotes:

Thierry Neuville (4th) said:

“It was quite a difficult evening for us as I wasn’t 100 per cent comfortable with either the set-up of the car or the pacenotes. We were definitely losing too much time, but I think that that was the best we could have done and we’ll work hard with the team to change the settings for tomorrow and hopefully do better.”

Evgeny Novikov (7th) said:

“This evening has been OK for us. Of course it was interesting to drive in darkness because it has been a long time since we have driven any night stages. From the second stage onwards we were following Thierry’s [Neuville] split times and so far everything is going OK and we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

Mads Østberg (8th) said:

“It has been a challenging first day, but we are here which is the main thing. We have been struggling with the gear-changes, and I don’t think the gearbox option we came up with in testing worked so well for us this evening, but I hope it will be better on tomorrow’s stages.”

Hayden Paddon (9th) said:

“This evening was a challenge, but we got up to speed with the car reasonably quickly and I felt comfortable. We were struggling with the set-up a little so the times aren’t exactly where we want them to be just yet. Nevertheless, we got through this evening and we got some more miles under our belts. Tonight we are going to make the car a bit stiffer so hopefully we can improve a lot tomorrow.”

Nasser Al-Attiyah (12th) said:

“Honestly, it has not been a bad evening for us. I find the night stages quite difficult and we have never driven these stages before so we decided to manage our pace and finish all of the stages without any issues. We know what we have to do tomorrow, so I hope we can make some good progress.”

Elfyn Evans (2nd in WRC 2) said:

“We had a bit of an issue from quite early on in the first stage, but through talking with the team we managed to rectify it and the car was running properly from then on. It was a shame to lose the time to Robert [Kubica] as I was looking forward to really taking the fight to him here this weekend. That said, I think there is certainly a lot more to come from me this weekend and I am really looking forward to tomorrow.”

Team Principal, Malcolm Wilson OBE, said:

“I think all of the drivers have struggled a little with the set-up in these dark conditions, but with some small adjustments, I am sure we will be better placed tomorrow. Despite struggling to find the optimum set-up, Hayden [Paddon] in particular has been very impressive on his debut and I am sure there is more to come from him as we move into tomorrow.

“It’s been a solid start to the rally. All of the cars have run without any issues and that gives us a good base to build on tomorrow.”

The Rally de Espana is Based in the seaside resort of Salou on Spain’s Costa Daurada as it has been since 2005. The unique event is one of the highlights of the WRC season and attracts tens of thousands of fans and makes for a great atmosphere out on the world stage.

For this years event, rally organisers have reversed the 2012 order of the asphalt and gravel stages so that after starting out as a classic asphalt rally on the first two days, it will turn into a loose-surface event on Sunday. Which could make for Team tactics on Saturday night, and make for a tough last day as the crews will have to re-adjust back to Gravel driving after 2 days on Tarmac and the previous Tarmac event in France.

Evening service for the crews will mean a complete change of set up as the cars suspension, wheels and breaks along with other changes, to go from Tarmac spec, to Gravel spec.

Day 3 will also have six stages, but all on Gravel. SS12/15 terra Alta will be a mix of both Gravel and tarmac and will end the rally.

Who will win?

With the Drivers Championship decided, no driver will have anything to loose. Ogier will of course be expected to be at the top. But the Manufactures Championship is still to play for. “Seventh place is all we need to claim the world [Manufactures] championship title”,
said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “If things go as normal,
we’ll manage that in Spain. It really would be the icing on the cake if we were
to achieve this in our debut season – we would never even have dreamed of it at
the beginning”

But Tarmac specialist (and pretty handy and gravel too) Is Thierry Neuville. Getting closer to his first victory with every Rally and wants that win more than anything this year, He will be a tough man to beat. On WRC.com Neuville said  “I want to win a rally this year and I will do everything to achieve this goal.”  Citroen’s Dani Sordo has stepped up to battle Neuville on the black stuff so far this season. However with this being a mixed event he may struggle on the gravel of day 3. Tactics could play apart on Saturday night for road position on Sunday, no one will want to sweep the loose surface, especially if there’s victory in sight. but how much time would they risk to drop with only 130km’s of gravel to drive on.

Hayden Paddon will be making his debut in a WRC car after his impressive performances in his S2000 Fabia over the season. Although he will be looking to get to the finish, he could be ready to pick up the piece’s and a podium if some of the top drivers falter. The Kiwi will make the most out of this opportunity given to him by Qatar M-Sport. “The goals for the Spanish rally are straightforward: we need to finish,
make sure we get as much time behind the wheel as possible and will target key
stages to try and show glimpses of speed. We’ll be working hard, doing intensive
homework of the Spanish event, physical training and some testing with M-sport
to make the most of this opportunity.”

All the latest Photos and news will be on InsideRally throughout the Weekend.
