In Sweden, a few days before the 2011 WRC season kicks of, Ken Block and the Monster World Rally Team have revealed the new livery of the 2011 Fiesta World Rally Car and announced their schedule for 2011, competing in more WRC rounds as well as competing in Summer X Games, Gymkhana GRID, and selected RallyCar rallies and RallyCross events in the United States.

Block tested the new car in Sweden on Sunday for the first time and said, “It’s exceeded my expectations, I didn’t really know what to think with the 1.6-litre turbo and the type of power it had but coming from driving the S2000 [Fiesta] I’m very happy to say it’s very quick. It has a lot of capabilities but I’m braking way too early and I’m not on the gas enough. I’m just trying to figure it out. It’s part of the fun but it will take a lot of miles before I can drive this thing to the limit.” In addition, Block and the Monster World Rally Team are also pleased to announce three new sponsors for the 2011 season. Joining Monster Energy, Ford, DC Shoes, Pirelli, Dirt3, Spy Optics, Hoonigan, Ryno Organics and Alpinestars will be Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Traxxas and GoPro.

Ken Block and the Monster World Rally Team revealed the new livery and 2011 plans in a video on youtube.

WRC 2011 Season Preview

2011 is just about to kick off in the cold wintry snow banks of Sweden. And it will be the beginning of a new era for the sport as the regulations change to a 1.6 litre turbo charged engine. Which is designed to attract more manufactures, and to try and keep costs of the sport down.

Much interest has picked up thanks to these changes. We shall see a British icon return back to the sport, in the shape of BMW-Mini run by Prodrive, and will compete in part of the season, starting from Sardinia, before fully committing to the sport in 2012.

There has also been other interests from manufactures such as Saab, Toyota, Hyundai, VW and Renault. Renault’s interest has picked up in rallying due to Lotus taking over the majority of their F1 team, freeing up alot of finance which some of which shall go to their R3 Rally program with the Clio, though there’s no word yet about entering the WRC. Volkswagen are the next manufacture expected to enter the WRC next, with their successful Dakar programme coming to an end, they are looking at other forms of motorsport, mostly the WRC. After the Dakar, Volkswagens Motorsport Director Kris Nissen said “WRC will be very interesting within the next year or so. We are interested in looking at other motorsports, the board are looking at the WRC and will make a final decision in the year”. VW driver and this years Dakar winner Nasser Al-attiyah, is expected to be in the drivers seat. It is also rumoured that Petter Solberg could be part of the driver line up, If VW do decide to commit to the WRC. There is also a rumour that Hyundai are looking to make a return with the new Veloster Coupe in 2012.

A lot of talk and interest for this year has been around the teams driver line up for 2011. Citroën Total World Rally Team entered their two French drivers Sébastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier in the new Citroën DS3 WRC, and for the first time in the 7 years of Loebs dominance, he shall start the season as equal number one in the team with team mate Ogier.

Team principal Olivier Quesnel has admitted that there is a risk of friction between his two French stars, but he insists that a healthy competitive environment is more important than the convenience of his team. “This year can be interesting with the two Sebs,” said Quesnel. “But it is very important for Citroen for both drivers to know that they start the year equal. After that, we will see how the season goes, but I think it will be a good story.” Loeb’s thoughts are “Of course, when you have won a certain number of rallies and championships, it would be hard to accept being a number two, instead, I would rather stop.” Unlike Sordo, Ogier has ruled out becoming Loeb’s understudy. “As far as I am concerned, we start off equal now,” said the two times rally winner in Portugal and Japan last year. “I’m determined not to slip into the number two role.”

The Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team have entered the two Finns Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala in the Ford Fiesta RS WRC, and they too start the season as equal

drivers from the start of the season. Ford have put a lot of testing into their 2011 WRC challenger, and the chassis is based on the Fiesta S2000 which has already proved to be a winner on the Monte Carlo rally in 2010. Ford are very confident about their new car. Talking at Fords unveiling at the Autosport show in January, Mikko said, “Like we say every year it’s about time to take the crown away from him [Loeb],” said Hirvonen. “It’s for them and for us a fresh start – it feels like we are all starting from scratch with completely new cars. I feel ready for it, so I’m excited to get started for Sweden – I wish we were there already.” Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala start in Sweden together with Khalid Al Qassimi from United Arab Emirates.

A number of new WRC-teams are added to the works teams from Citroën and Ford. In the new ICE 1 Racing WRC team you will find Kimi Räikönnen driving a Citroën DS3 and Petter Solberg WRC Team in a DS3 WRC Citroën number four. With Kimi competing in 10 rounds of the championship, he will skip the rounds in Mexico, Italy (Sardinia) and Argentina. Petter is expected to complete in all 13 rounds of the WRC in 2011 under his own Petter Solberg World Rally Team banner.

American Ken Block has been entered by Monster World Rally Team in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC for Sweden and the Dutchman Dennis Kuipers by Ferm Powertools World Rally Team in an identical car.

Paddon’s bid for 2011 PWRC title in a Subaru

New Zealand’s top rally star Hayden Paddon has revealed details for his 2011 PWRC campaign and bid to fight for the title.

Last weekend, (22nd Jan) Hayden Paddon held a fundraising dinner to reveal his plans and details for his 2011 PWRC campaign, and made the announcement of the newly formed New Zealand World Rally Team, something that Paddon describes as a “dream come true”. The new team is run by Hayden Paddon Rallysport Global Ltd, a company formed by Paddon and his supporters in 2010.

Paddon’s 2011 campaign represents the first time a New Zealand team has put together a  full PWRC campaign, and has also swaped from his Mitsubishi which he contested 2010 in with the Pirelli star driver scheme, to a Subaru. Paddon say’s “While it’s no secret that we wanted to get back overseas and win the PWRC title this year, what may surprise many is our switch of cars to form a partnership with rally giant, Subaru. Last year’s opportunities with the Pirelli Star Driver programme were amazing, and to follow that up by being able to put our own global programme together is fantastic. We were offered an opportunity to run with Ralliart Italy again this year in a Mitsubishi, but after being approached by a Subaru representative, we decided to make the change as we feel that there are greater future possibilities with Subaru.”

He goes on to say, “The move to Subaru will be a big change for us, especially considering how much we have achieved in a series of Mitsubishi. In saying that, I am confident that driving the Subaru will give us a better chance of winning the championship as they are very strong, well-balanced cars. At the end of the day, as long as it has four wheels and a steering wheel, I’m happy! As a youngster I was always a huge Subaru fan, and now to get a chance to drive one in world competition fulfils a childhood dream.”

Running a latest spec STR11 Subaru Impreza N4 for Paddon and his co-driver John Kennard, is a highly regarded Belgium team, Symtech Racing. Symtech is well-known in Europe for its extensive expertise building and running competitive Subaru Impreza rally cars to international Group N regulations. The team won the PWRC title back in 2004 with Irish star Niall McShea and is also currently successfully running the official Subaru Poland rally team in the Polish national rally championships.

Hayden say’s “This is our first time dealing with Symtech, but Dirk, Wim and the rest of the team are really enthusiastic about working with us. They are every bit as motivated to win the production championship as we are. All the ingredients are there for it to be a successful relationship and we are confident that the car will be very competitive.”

Paddon finished third in the PWRC on his debut in 2010. That campaign had the backing of funding and a professionally prepared vehicle from the Pirelli Star Driver scholarship that Paddon won in 2009, as well as funding from Paddon’s own sponsors and a Rally New Zealand Rising Stars driver development award. Since he finished Rally GB, he immediately got to work, and continued non-stop in getting together the funding, sponsors and support. “There has been a phenomenal amount of hard work by many people to put this campaign together,” said the two-time New Zealand rally champion at the team’s launch at a special fundraising dinner. “While we are not over the finish line yet in terms of the budget, we are well on our way and will continue to work on the required funds throughout the year.”

His only aim is to fight to win the 2011 Production World Rally Championship, but knows it will be a real challenge. “The competition is looking a lot stronger this year,” notes Paddon. “As we found out last year, there is simply no room for error at this level. Where we had three or four teams fighting for victory last year, I feel the number of potential victors will double this year. This is great for the championship and also means that we have to work even harder to make our goal of winning the championship a reality.”

Paddon has nominated the following six PWRC events: Vodafone Rally de Portugal (24-27 March), Rally Argentina (26-29 May), Neste Oil Rally Finland (28-31 July), Rally Australia (8-11 Sept), Rally de Espana (20-23 Oct) and Wales Rally GB (10-13 Nov).

Bouffier Wins Centenary Rallye Monte Carlo 2011

Rallye Monte-Carlo. A prestigious event, that takes no Prisoners. The challenging twisty, technical mountain roads, which puts even the greatest drivers in the world to the test. The 2011 season opener of the IRC marked the centenary edition of The Monte. Famous for the unpredictable weather conditions out on the treacherous mountain roads, anything could happen. and 2011 was no different.

Day 1 started out surprisingly dry, although that didn’t make it easy for any of the 120 drivers that entered. After the first 2 stages 21 had already retired, and many suffered punctures on the winding roads. Both Protons where out by stage 2, PG after taking off a wheel, and Chris Atkinson didn’t even make it 700 meters into stage one due to an electrical problem. Mikkelsen retired on stage one after broken suspension and Henning out on stage 2 with the same problem. A further 9 went out in the final two stages of the day. But the real headline news was the unbeatable pace of Juho Hanninen, who after 2 stage wins, put him in the top spot at the end of the day, with a lead of 44.5 seconds. With ‘Fast’ Freddy Loix in second spot after winning the final stage. WRC’s Mr Hollywood, Petter Solberg finished in 3rd after saying he made a small mistake and it was a little slipery, but was ‘loving it’ out there on the roads. Stephane Sarrazin finished 4th with Britans Peugeot UK driver Guy Wilks in 5th.

The morning of Day 2 started much the same as how Day 1 ended. But with the scenery in a frosty coating in temps of -5 degrees. On the dry but slippery roads, Petter swapped positions with Loix to grab second by mid-day service after 2 second fastest stage times. But while the Crews where in service, the Monte took a turn for the worst for the drivers. And the final two stage’s showed what the Monte is all about. In the 100 years that the event has been going, it once again proved what an unpredictable and challenging test it was to any who attempted to conquer it. At mid-day service, the crews were in disarray trying to decide which were the best tyres to go out on for the last two stages of the day.

Delecour choosing 4 Studs with snows in the boot and Bouffier taking a similar choice but with 4 snows an 2 studs in the back. Solberg went for a safe option of 4 cut Inters and 2 snows in the back – Hanninen and Kopecky followed suit. Wilks went with snow all round. Loix took 4 snow, and 2 inters in the boot. And at the other end of the ‘tyre scale’, Maurin and Vigion both went for Slicks.

The drivers left the safety of the service park, and that was when the Monte bit hard. The weather and tyre choice totally shook up the leaderboard. The cars struggling to find grip  on the freshly fallen snow. Hanninen dropped down to 4th, Petter dropped to 7th. And the new top 3 were Bouffier, Sarrazin and Loix. Then onto the snow filled final stage. By this time, most of the field realised their choice on tyres was wrong. But the 1994 Monte Carlo winner Francois Delecour showed his experience and knowledge to take the stage win by 27.1 seconds to move from 8th in the morning to 2nd overall. With everyone else sliding and spinning off the road in all directions, much to the excitement of the rally radio reporters Colin Clark  and Julian Porter, and to the many fans around the world, watching at home the action ensued live on Eurosport. Guy Wilks did a great job to over take two struggling slick wearing cars on the stage and was 4th fastest, but beating him on the stage in the Subaru impreza was Florian Gonon. Norwegians Petter Solberg also showing how important tyre choice was, by this time losing over 3 minutes to finish 7th overall.

So after the mix up thanks to snow and tyres Day 2 ended with Bouffier leading overall by 28 seconds, with Delecour 2nd. Freddy Loix got the bottom step of the podium 37.5 behind. Britain’s Guy Wilks 4th, Circuit racer Sarrazin managed 5th. Original leader Hanninen dropped way down the order to 6th and Solberg 7th.

Day 3 And it was a welcome sight for most to see the sunshining and the roads dry. After just the one stage in the morning everyone was pushing to make up for the time lost yesterday, with no position change. After service, the crews await for the final 4 evening stages. The next stage being the infamous and most challenging stage in Rallying, the Col de Turini. On the fan flooded and mostly dry but slippery stage, Delecour dropped to 3rd and Sarrazin moved to 4th, then straight onto the Lantosque stage were Sarrazin struggled due to his Gearbox stuck in 4th, luckily most of it was down hill and only dropped back to 5th overall. Bryan Bouffier still leading now by 47.7, it was back to service before hitting the final two stages. On the re-run of Col de Turini, Sarrazin took the stage win thanks to his gear box change and got back 3rd. Guy Wilks dropped to 5th after changing the car and making it to soft. Ex-F1 driver Alex Caffi showed off to the crowd by a failed attempt of doing a 360, which turned into a 3 point turn, but still delighted the snow ball throwing fans. Then onto the final stage.

Sarrazin again took the stage win, Hanninen 2nd fastest showing what he could have done if it wasnt for the snow. Bryan Bouffier was only 9th fastest, but it was enough to Grab the win overall, and put his mark in the history books on the centenary edition of the Monte Carlo Rally, saying “It’s fantastic, really fantastic! I’m so happy, for Peugeot, for the team. Lots of emotions. It’s really amazing. It was really tricky rally, but Peugeot gave me perfect car, I’m happy for them!” Freddy Loix got 2nd place, And sarrazin won 3rd. Wilks, Delecour and Hanninen got 4th, 5th and 6th, with Petter finishing 7th.

Pic from Rally-irc.com

However, after the final stage, the action still wasn’t over. Petter finished the final stage with Alternator Problems and didn’t make it back to the final time control. He broke down just 12Km away from service and after completing every stage of the rally, he had to retire from the Rally on the final Road section. Also, Stephane Sarrazin checked into final time control late, receiving a penalty dropping him to 4th, which promoted Britain’s Peugeot UK driver Guy Wilks to the final step of the podium.

Final results:

1st Bryan Boufffier

2nd Freddy Loix

3rd Guy Wilks

4th Stephane Sarrazin

5th Francois Delecour

6th Juho Hanninen

7h Nicolas Voilloz
