Day 2 Rally Germany, Loeb holds big lead

Day 2 of Rally Germany and the rain finally came. But it caught everyone out. All the WRC guys went out on Hard tyres. But as always, Loeb was the lucky one.

Despite the Frenchman going out on Hard tyres, the first stage was actually dry when he first went out, the rain waited for Loeb to come towards the end of the stage before it Lashed down on the rest of the field. With the others struggling for grip under breaking and on exits of the corners, Loeb had, on just one stage almost doubled his lead over the rest.

On the 2nd stage of the day, Ss8. It was an even field interms of ‘wetness’. And this turned things interesting. It was Mini’s Dani Sordo who went fastest. With Solberg making up a little bit of time on Loeb, coming 2nd fastest but only 0.2 faster then Loeb. Solberg’s team mate Jari Matti Latvala was sitting well in 3rd in the overall times, but in the wet conditions the Finn Made a mistake on breaking for a corner. His brakes locked up and he went straight on. Lost enough time to drop him down to 5th overall due to the tight battle that was now forming between 3rd and 5th place. In the middle of it, was Neuville, doing a very good job this weekend, overall his 4th, just a second behind Sordo and 2 seconds ahead of Latvala.

The next stage, and last of the morning loop, was the mega 46.54km Panzerplatte stage. Based in military grounds of Baumholder. A real test for drivers. Unfortunately the close battle between Sordo, Neuville and Latvala came to an end. Dani Sordo in his Mini was finally showing a strong pace until a Puncture cost him over 2 minutes. Neuville was next to suffer, went crashing off into the German military Trees.

But the biggest name at the top, and trying to put pressure on Loeb out in front, was Petter Solberg. He Hit a rock and broke suspension and steering, had to retire before the end of the Stage.

The driver who impressed the most was Ott Tanak, he set 2 fastest stage times and was up to 4th place overall. Unfortunately it was the Panzaplatte stage which once again struck hard. Tanak ripped wheel off on a hinkelsten on the stage and that was the end of the Rally for him. He wasn’t the only driver to fall on the military stage. Petter Van Merksteijn Jr rolled the car right in front of where Tanak had stopped.

Back at the top, it was business as usual for Sebastien Loeb, well on his way to win 74, endding day 2 in Rally Germany with a lead of 1:42.9 over 2nd place Latvala, and Hirvonen 3rd.

For the morning of day 1 in Rally Germany. Sebastien Loeb, as expected, totally dominated the German Vineyards. Fastest on all 3 of the scenic stages that wound up the Mosel valley. The Frenchman opened up a 13.1 second lead after the morning loop. Petter Solberg said after shakedown that he would be “flat out to try an win”. And he wasn’t far off that. 2nd fastest on both SS1 & 2. But on SS3 he only managed 3rd quickest, complaining of some sort of a problem which put him off his rhythm. Went 0.7 slower than his team mate Latvala who is currently in 3rd overall, 18.8 seconds away from the lead.

The drivers to hit problems were Russian driver Evgeny Novikov, going off on stage one and ripped his rear wheel off his Fiesta RS. And SS3 had to be stopped momentarily, so as to send in emergency crews to put out Martin Prokops Car which caught fire in the stage, both Novikov and Prokop & co were ok.

After Service it was back out and a repeat of the morning stages. For the first time so far this rally, Loeb wasn’t the fastest man. It was Fords Jari Matti Latvala that was quickest by 1.8 seconds. Showing that he can still impress on the black stuff when everything works well. On the final 2 stages it was Loeb as usual. Fastest again on both, and ended day 1 with a lead of 20.4 seconds over Petter Solberg.“For sure I am happy,” said French legend Loeb. “We are leading, that’s really
good and we started to increase a little bit our lead. I am pushing hard because
I am feeling comfortable in the car and I am able to make some differences so
that’s good.”

So far Ogier is the only confirmed driver for the works team, but rumours say that Fords Jari Matti Latvala is possible in the line up for the works drive. Anther driver linked to VW is Andreas Mikklesen. who competes along with Ogier in a S2000 Skoda, which is owned and ran by VW.

The car: The car of choice is the VolksWagen Polo R World Rally car and has been in development since 2011. It will kick off VW’s campaign in Monte carlo in 2013.

Volkswagen motorsport director Jost Capito is confident the German firm’s
presence in the World Rally Championship will help attract more global
commercial interest in the series.

“It’s time to wake the sleeping lion,” said Capito. “Volkswagen coming [to WRC]
will boost the championship a lot. Volkswagen will do everything needed for the
WRC and it will help in other ways, by boosting sponsorship, bringing the media
back and other partners – it will help in bringing the television back. There is
an issue with the promoter, we all know about that.”

Volkswagen’s Polo R WRC looks set to make its World Rally Championship debut on
Rally d’Italia in October after an agreement has been reached between the German
manufacturer and the FIA.
