Petter Solberg was in 2nd place just 20 seconds off the lead. But a distraught Norwegian reached the stage finish punching the steering wheel of his car after a power steering failure resulting in dropping to 1m16.1s adrift of leader Sebastien Ogier. Solberg dropped from 2nd place down to 4th.

Ogier’s Citroen team-mate Sebastien Loeb won the stage to close to within four seconds of factory Ford pilot Mikko Hirvonen, who is second overall, 43.7s behind Ogier. Other Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala had led the rally since the morning of day 1 and set blistering pace, but suffered broken compression strut on SS13 and retired on SS14.

WRC Argentina – Day 2 mid-day wrap

WRC.com’s Mid-day wrap of day 2 in Rally Argentina. The battle for victory on Rally Argentina is tightly poised at the midday service halt in Villa Carlos Paz following Saturday’s opening quartet of stages in the Calamuchita valley south of the event base.

Jari-Matti Latvala started the day’s first test, a 21.57-kilometre mixed-surface blast, with an overnight lead of 18.2s in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC. He was able to extend that advantage slightly when chief rival Petter Solberg spun his Citroen DS3 WRC midway through the stage.

However, on the two all-gravel stages that followed the Finn struggled to resist new second-placed driver Sebastien Ogier’s advances as he battled through the loose-surface gravel running first on the road. But he hit back on stage 11, which means his margin over Ogier, in a Citroen DS3 WRC, is 17.8s with four stages of day two to go.

“It’s not going as good as I wanted,” said the 26-year-old Latvala. “On the first stage I made a lot of mistakes and on the second stage also. The third and fourth stages were okay but I know I’m losing a lot of time with the dust on top of the road. The only thing I can do is to push on.”

Ogier moved into second overall by winning Saturday’s opener and trimmed Latvala’s lead on the next two stages. But he was marginally slower than Latvala through stage 11, which he completed with slight damage to his front-right tyre. “I am happy with my performance because I am discovering the stages,” said Ogier. “I correct a lot my pace notes and I’m ready to push a lot this afternoon.”

Solberg holds third in his privateer Citroen, which he said had been slowed by his decision to carry two spare wheels in contrast to the bulk of his rivals who are carrying one spare only. He’s three seconds behind Ogier and 20.8s adrift of Latvala. “It was a good morning but I was diving with two spares, which was not a good idea because I was losing time,” said the Norwegian. “I was also struggling too much with understeer so we will see if we can do something in the service area.”

Sebastien Loeb has claimed three stage wins this morning as he continues to make up the time lost when he was handed a one-minute time penalty on Friday. The Citroen star and world championship leader is now 26.2s adrift of fourth-placed Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen.

“The last two stages were very good but I made a mistake in the morning by using worn tyres,” said the 37-year-old. “Since that I have been pushing very hard and it’s going very well but I’m so far behind. I will continue to push, which is the only thing I can do.”

Norwegian youngster Mads Ostberg is a solid sixth in his M-Sport Stobart Ford Fiesta but team-mate Matthew Wilson lost ground on stage 10 when he nudged his Fiesta’s right-rear tyre off its rim hitting a bank. He falls to eighth overall behind Argentine Munchi’s Fiesta driver Federico Villagra.

New Zealander Hayden Paddon continues to dominate the Production Car World Rally Championship in his Subaru Impreza WRX, despite his team being unable to solve the power glitch that has affected him for much of the event.

Saturday’s action restarts with the repeat of the Las Jarillas-Falda del Carmen test, which is due to go live at 14:08hrs local time.

Its been a real struggle for the boys further down in the PWRC. Day 1 was a rough and tough event for the Group N cars. Most of day 1 was led by Patrik Flodin in his Subaru Impreza but his day came to an end due to electrical problems and was unable to start the final stage. A lot of the PWRC drivers had problems and total confusion set amounts most trying to make sense of it.

Martin Semerad crashed out in the morning loop. Harry Hunt slid off the road on the first run through el Condor. Kosciuszko, who was in 2nd place, and Fuchs both stopped on the last stage. The only driver that seems to have made it to the end of a destructive Production car breaking day 1, was Kiwi driver Hayden Paddon. At the end of the final stage said, “One of the hardest day’s rally I’ve ever done. I’ve enjoyed it – it’s sandy and rocky and fast. Bits have fallen off the car, but I’ve loved it.” Paddon does a repeat of Rally Portugal and now takes the lead of the PWRC by a massive lead in his Symtech racing run Subaru Impreza by 7 minutes 17 seconds to Alejandro Levy, and Dmitrv Tagirov in 3rd and at the end of the stage said “It was dangerous, but i enjoyed it.”

Latvala leads day 1 Argentina

Its been a tough test for the worlds best Rally drivers on day 1 of rally Argentina, But at the end of it Jari-Matti Latvala leads, and day 1 ended with no tactics or swapping around road position.

It was a great day for Ford Abu Dhabi’s Jari-Matti Latvala, after finding the rhythm and setting blistering pace on day 1 he leads Petter Solberg by 18.2 seconds. On SS4 El Condor, Latvala was fastest by a good 9.2 seconds an blew everyone away with his pace on the tarmac section at the end where even Loeb struggled, and the Fin set an average speed of 196kph in the final 6km’s of the stage, it’s believed that the Fiesta has a top speed of around 203kph, which gives an idea of his pace in the final part of that stage. That amazing pace continued in the afternoon and took anther fastest time on SS5.

But on SS6, the Mina Clavero stage, some of the glory went to Petter Solberg, as the 2003 World champion not only set the fastest stage time, but it was his 400 stage win of his career. on SS7 Loeb finally showed us what makes him 7 times champ an set his first proper Gravel stage win of the rally so far, although he finishes the day down in 5th after incurring a 1 minute penalty going into regroup at mid-day service 2 seconds to early.

Ahead of Loeb up in 4th place is Fords Mikko Hirvonen who was 15.5s slower than Loeb, which he said was down to his tyres losing grip and struggling on the final tarmac section of the final stage, along with a less than ideal set-up. Ahead of the Ford man finishing the day in 3rd place, and will be 3rd on road tomorrow is the other Seb, known as Seb 2.0, Ogier saying, “It was not strategy. I was a little scared about my tyres on the Tarmac.

Ending today in 2nd place overall was the very delighted P.Solberg who lost time to JML in the final stage but happy to be very near the top saying, “It’s been a very good day actually. On the tarmac I just didn’t know how to approach it. But a good day, I am very, very happy.”

But all the glory of day 1 goes to Latvala saying, “[The final stage] was okay. After 10 km I braked too late and stalled the engine. I didn’t need to reverse but I still lost some time. I was actually enjoying the tarmac section. i want to be first car on the road tomorrow, I think its a good position.”

Stobart boys of Mads Ostberg and Matt Wilson are battling each other and sit in 6th and 7th. Home boy Frederico Villagra is in 8th and still getting cheered enthusiastically by his home fans from stage side. And american Ken Block ends the day in 9th, after realising that he can’t keep up with the pace of the top boys, he takes a less risky plan and shows off to the spectators in his Gymkhana style driving in the last few corners, burning whats left of his rubber.
